SLOWLY HEADING HOME

After our time in Lake Placid we started our trek home.  It wouldn't be a fast trip...just moseying along.  We knew that our next major stop would be Mammoth Caves in Kentucky.  So these pictures depict that portion of our trip.  We continued south, but made a slight detour into West Virginia.   This state was our 49TH state to visit...only leaving Hawaii.  So now we've been in all of the continental U. S. and a lot of Canada.

While we were in West Virginia, we made a short trip to Marshall University.  If you've ever seen the movie "We Are Marshall" with Matthew McConaughey, you know the story of the plane crash that killed their football team, coaches, boosters and the pilots in 1970.  The plane crashed very near Huntington West Virginia where the University is located.  The fountain is to commemorate that tragedy.   Beautiful campus.  Also while we were in West Virginia, we made a quick (and I mean quick) trip to Ohio (right across the river) to get a Geocache from that state.

Now, onward to Mammoth Caves.  We arrived, set up the trailer and went out to the park to see about tour tickets.  David and I selected one tour, then David also wanted to go on a second tour and Margaret selected her own 4 hour tour.   David and I have done that one before and had no desire to do it again.  Caves are fascinating places...cool rooms, stalagmites, stalactites, columns, pillars, BUGS, BATS and ABSOLUTE DARKNESS.  Got a little of all of those on our tours...Oh OK, there were no bats (that we saw)...but you get the idea.

Yes, I got on a bus

Cave Cricket...yuk
Then it was time to take Margaret to the airport in Nashville.  She needed to get home to go to a reception for her college mentor (who was receiving an award).  Hated to see her leave us after 60+ days.  While we were in Nashville, after dropping Margaret off at the airport, we decided to go by the Grand Ole Opry to look around.  Interesting place, with lots of people stopping by.

We then returned to Mammoth Cave area and got ready to leave.  We were having trouble with the trailer (the slide didn't want to work correctly) so we decided to head to Texas. We left the Mammoth Cave area and headed to Nashville, TN to pick up the Natchez Trace.  We were going to take it all the way to Natchez, MS.  Such a beautiful drive and so peaceful with no big 18 wheeler trucks.

We made the trip down the Natchez Trace and stayed at a nice RV Campground called Goshen Springs, near Jackson, MS.  Our very last night on the road we stayed at the Coushatta Casino RV Resort in Kinder, LA.  Went to the casino and won a whopping $12.  Such a gambler.  The next day would get us home ....after 10,615 miles, 23 states (counting Texas),and 5 Canadian Provinces our East Coast Trip was over.   Well, we're ready to go again already....don't know where yet, but the adventure will continue.  Hope you liked the blog, let me know..Safe journey everyone.

Bay of Fundy to Fall Foliage

Staying up in Nova Scotia wasn't hard to do.  So beautiful.  We wanted to stay around long enough to get to see the tidal change in the Bay of Fundy.  The end of the month was to bring a super high/low tide change because of the supermoon.  The difference was 48.2 feet from low tide at 7:25 a.m. to high tide at 2:25 p.m.  It was a very drastic change to see.

While we were waiting on the tidal change, we explored the area some.  Went to the Fundy Geological Museum in Parrsboro, Nova Scotia...pretty interesting place.  Well presented information.

Gotta love a good dinosaur display
It finally became time to leave Canada.  We had been there almost a month.  So we packed up the trailer and headed south towards Vermont and New York.  Stayed in Vermont only one night, but it was interesting.  We saw a beautiful wild river, went to Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream Factory, saw some gorgeous fall color, went by the VonTrapp Family Lodge in Stowe, Vermont and took the most hair raising ferry ride ever across Lake Champagne to New York.

Arrived in the Adirondack region of New York and found a nice campground in Wilmington, NY near Lake Placid.  My cousin, Margaret wanted to get together with some friends from her days of working with the Olympic Luge Team.  Such nice people.  Got to meet Mark Grimmett who was a Silver and Bronze Medalist in the '98 Nogano and  2002 Salt Lake City games.  He took us on a tour of the Olympic facilities in Lake Placid, especially the luge/bobsled site.

Even got to hold one of his medals :)

The highlight of our visit to Lake Placid was for David and I to be able to get together with our Thomas Jefferson High School dear friend, Linda Davis Fitzpatrick.  We got together several times with her and her husband, Charlie.  Had a special evening with them at their beautiful home in the woods overlooking their own lake.  Such a wonderful evening.  It was so great to get together and just visit, visit, visit.  We have been here 5 days and could stay even longer.
